Female Focus Summer Makeovers at The Grand Salon in Gahanna/New Albany

On Thursday, July 15th, we welcomed two lovely ladies to The Grand Salon in Gahanna/New Albany for a Summer Sparkler makeover!

Crystal Traini, mother of two and graduate school student, received a modernized new look to help her get our of her "20 year style rut."  Meredith, Director, took Crystal's color to a brilliant red and provided her with a modern, slightly asymetrical style.  Alyssa's makeup lesson and application provided Crystal with a fantastic palette of complimentary colors and makeup tips relevant for her lifestyle.

With the help of our Charles Penzone Team, Martha Grodesky received a new look to help jump-start her new career as a business owner.  Martha, mother of three and former corporate employee, was looking for a new look to get her confidence in her new career.  Stella, Designer, shortened the length of Martha's hair and added in highlights to compliment her face.  Allie, Master Esthetician, showed Martha how to apply her makeup for every day.

We were pleased to meet these fantastic local women and wish them the best in their next steps - in their careers and in their lives!

Flawless Faces, Even in the Summertime Heat

Keeping your face looking fresh and radiant in the warm summer air can be tricky. Luckily, we can help let you in on some secrets to keep your makeup looking fabulous all summer long!

To help makeup last a little longer in the heat, try applying a primer, like Younblood's Mineral Primer, before your foundation.  This gives your skin an even, smooth tone while creating a great barrier against sweat and humidity. After primer and foundation, adding a little bit of bronzer can give you the healthy glow you’ve been looking for.  When applying bronzer, it’s important to apply it where the sun would naturally hit your face. With a powder brush, apply to forehead, apples of the cheeks, on the nose, and just a little on the chin. Adding makeup to the eyes and lips will finish off your picture perfect summer look!

MAX The Salon Illustrates "Women-Centric" Personalities at Virginia Homes Event

On Saturday, June 12, Virginia Homes hosted an amazing event for the modern woman. The event took place in one of their many beautiful model homes and event attendees enjoyed presentations and demonstrations on interior design, floral, children’s ideals and even culinary concepts to reflect the modern woman's home, family and entertaining style.

Taking into consideration how instrumental women are in the house-buying process, Virginia Homes developed the “Women Centric” concept.  This concept defines how truly unique every woman is, the event highlighted these differences by developing personality profiles.  Each woman in attendance was offered an on-line quiz which placed them in one of four profiles to help represent each person’s personal style, buying behaviors and overall direction in life.

This is where MAX The Salon (Gary Motto, Jade Piatt & Benjamin Young), Elizabeth Bean Smith of Wardrobe Therapy and SAKS came into play!  Collaborating with one another, we created a visual path for every guest to be stimulated by their very own personality profile:

1.    Margo: her favorite color is purple. She's contemporary, cutting edge, modern, likes clean lines, not a bargain hunter, avid learner, edgy, balanced, workaholic/leadership, loves change/wow factor, bores easily, form over function.

2.    Claire: her color is pink/taupe. She's detailed, likes defined  space, lighting important, loves entertaining, elegant, formal- traditional, in control, adapts to change, gives 100% to home, loves  good fabric, detailed oriented, informed buyer, avoids later, home  makes statement.

3.    Elise: her favorite color is blue. She's traditional, low maintenance, family first, loves pets, care giver, conservative, works for family, loves structure, her home and name brands, function over form.

4.    Maggie: her color is green. She's spur of the moment, likes animals, has a hobby room, environmentally concerned (green), spontaneous, entertains with games & fun, always in a project, house is not priority, likes fun, friends, trips & travel, avoids change.

Read about Gary’s Inspiration and how YOU can achieve these fabulous looks:

Margo is very fashion forward. Today’s modern image has come back to body, wave, curl and fullness. Margo was enhanced with multicolor and Hairdreams hair extensions.  I then finished the image with FHI flatiron curls.  Products are a must to Margo, so a combination of Morrocanoil and Alterna products were utilized to achieve her finished result.

Claire is classic with an edge of chic, so I enhanced Claire’s beautiful brunette locks with a Schwarzkopf high shine gloss.  Claire likes timeless yet modern results.  I used Morrocanoil on her damp hair, after a soft blow dry and FHI flatironing; I used Alterna Caviar finishing products to create a sleek sophisticated, yet modern,  variation to long shiny hair.

Elise is classic in her image, so I chose a clean a-line bob.  Bobs are timeless and consistent.  Elise was heavily foiled to create a beautiful pastel blonde.  Morrocanoil and Alterna's Volume System were used for fullness and bounce.

Maggie is more boho chic.  She's very active and needs her hair to make a statement, but stay out of her way.  Maggie came to me with beautiful locks. Locks are a softer more contemporary version of dread locks.  I  chose the trend of braiding for her finished style, and separated her locks into five sections.  I individually braided each section and wrapped them into a family of design.  I used a slight amount of Alterna Caviar Working Hairspray for control.  The end result; Maggie's look works from the hobby room to an evening on the town!

(L to R: Margo, Elise, Maggie & Claire)
I envisioned Margo to be the fashion-forward woman.  She is the woman who isn’t afraid to make a statement when she enters the room. She likes the attention to be focused on her.  For this outfit, I chose an asymmetrical print knit dress that came above the knee.  We accessorized the outfit with gold bangles and a long gold link necklace.  For her shoes, we paired a Grecian sandal for an easy, chic “day look.”  Everyone commented on Margo.  (Isn’t that what Margo wanted?)

I saw Claire to be the woman who loves fashion, but doesn’t need to go over-the-top.  She loves mixing her classic pieces with her more trendy, casual pieces.  For this woman, I thought that the best way to define her in terms of fashion is:  Classic Chic.  Think of Jennifer Aniston.  I chose a LBD, with a twist.  The designer was Sinclaire 10 from Saks.  This is a contemporary designer that has a moderate price point.   Claire also wore a chunky statement necklace and a little peep-toe classic pump.  She was extremely sassy, and many women related to her look.

Elise is a traditional, do it all woman.  She keeps the home perfect, is the leader of the kids’ PTA, very low maintenance that loves her family and puts them first, always. Elise can relate to so many women.  She is a classic dresser.  She likes to purchase items that she knows will live for quite some time in her wardrobe.  I chose a more conservative outfit for Elise.  She had a great Khaki jacket, layered over a lt. blue tank, and paired back to a Bermuda short.  She had a simple stretch bracelet and carried a classic Jimmy Choo handbag.  She resembled the woman who is modest and practical.

Maggie is all about the environment.  She loves animals, loves to travel and her home is not a priority.  Maggie fit the description of a woman who is bohemian in her dress.  In fact, she fit the classic description of Bohemian Chic.  For Maggie, I paired a sleeveless cotton print tunic back to a brown cargo capri pant.  The tunic had wood beads sewn into the neckline.  She carried a cross-over shoulder bag by Tory Burch.  The bag had fringe (so boho!) She wore a large hoop earring and wood bangles.  Her look was so perfect for Maggie!!

Our mission, every day, is to help each person feel as good as they look.  We were proud to contribute to this fabulous afternoon and to team up with Virginia Homes, Saks and Wardrobe Therapy to help empower women!

A special thank you to our models; Lisa Bradley (Margo), Barbie  Pallo (Elise), Kim Graham (Claire), Kimberly Mills (Maggie).

Project Penzone: Gaga for Gahanna

In March, we held our 41st Annual Awards Celebration at the Hilton Polaris.  During this year’s event, we honored our professionals for their hard work throughout the year and also encouraged crazy creativity with our unique “Project Penzone” theme.

This year’s event was a runway beauty and fashion competition inspired by Heidi Klum’s hit show, Project Runway.  Debra Penzone and our event planning committee sent kits to each of our salons to gear up for the runway show.  Each kit included a basic black dress, a wig and $25 dollars for materials and supplies.  Each of the salons formed teams to develop a theme and provide their magic on the models – incorporating the black dress into a fashionable theme-related look, while also designing the hair, makeup and nails.

Our professionals totally outdid themselves with themes like “Birds of a Feather,” “Lady Gaga,” “Vegas,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and “Vintage Victorian.”

To award our professionals’ creativity, several awards were distributed:
  • Best Overall Hair: The Grand Salon in Gahanna/New Albany
  • Best Overall Makeup: Q Salon
  • Best Nails: The Grand Salon in Dublin
Check out our great slideshow below:

Our Team at The Grand Salon in Gahanna/New Albany took home the win for BEST OVERALL theme and designs for Project Penzone.  Check out an excerpt from a blog written on what inspired their Lady Gaga theme:

Lady Gaga goes for the gusto when it comes to her wardrobe, hair and makeup.  For every event – a red carpet affair, performances, videos and editorials – Lady Gaga creates extremely avant guarde outfits that the normal lady Jane would blush at.  Whether you are gaga for Lady Gaga or not, you have to appreciate her bold tenacity.  As creatives, we can appreciate the “over the top,” which made “Lady Gaga” a perfect theme!

Famous for her provocative costumes and videos . . . which often draw on an array of masks, hairpieces and sparkling material…the options were endless!  Our only struggle was to decide which fierce looks to choose.  Lady Gaga is so amazingly fashion forward from her 10 inch headpieces to her 10 inch heels.

When Lady Gaga performs on stage. . .everything comes together in an elaborate show.  Our goal was to capture that energy by collaborating with people in the entertainment industry. With the help of two very talented gentleman, who provided us with music, choreography, and entertainment, everything came together without a hitch!  The crowd’s reaction made everything worth it!

Project Penzone was absolutely the experience of a lifetime. Each and every professional, as well as model, poured their entire hearts, souls, and talents into this show—from the custom designed wardrobes to the extreme hair. The nail professionals and makeup artists made every model’s look unique and spectacular. This hair and fashion show couldn’t have been possible without everyone’s tremendous efforts.  We were proud to join together as a team and so glad that our efforts paid off to help us win Project Penzone!
